County Days

Calendar created by Luke Blackstaffe.

Special commemorative days have been established by a number of counties to celebrate the achievements of famous sons and daughters and to extol the virtues of any particular county. While, obviously, county flags may be flown at any time these special days are ideal occasions to fly them. In several counties, such as Cornwall and Yorkshire, there is a marked recognition of the county day, with flags raised and special ceremonies held, whilst in other locations the concept is still fresh and not widely considered.

Other counties have yet to establish definitive days for themselves although the date a recently acquired flag was established is itself a viable date to be recognised as a county day. In recent years another aspect associated with the “County Day” has been the raising of the flag at the headquarters of the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) at its Eland House headquarters, London, although sadly, this practice now seems to be discontinued.
